Inc.... Thank you Inc for helping to select the first reads for the year.  The Theme so far appears to be use Contrarian Thinking to GO BIG or GO to Mars, which is appropriate considering the TOUGH Targets that our society needs to achieve if we are going to sustain life on a planet with Eleven Billion People. 

My three BIG take aways so far:

From Peter Thiel(PayPal):

• Pick an important Truth that very few people believe in.
• Create something that is 10x better (FACTOR 10)  if you want your business to be HUGELY successful like
• Take care of 7 essential elements: Technology, Timing, Monopoly Product, Team, Distribution, Durability and a Secret

From Elon Musk (SpacerX, Paypal, Tesla, Solar City):

• It helps when you come from a Family of Adventurers and Risk Takers
• SpaceX uses lean practices to develop space craft at 1/2 the cost
• Stay clear of sub-optimal hybrids, go for the electric car

SpaceX to Mars ... All new building to Net 0 by 2020

Musk, as he will gladly tell you, has a vision: Colonize Mars and make humans a multi-planet civilization. He sees it as insurance against a global catastrophe that leads to human extinction. (Quartz)

What it took for Elon Musk’s SpaceX to disrupt Boeing, leapfrog NASA, and become a serious space company - Quartz:

With the world currently using 1.6 planets worth of resources and our population heading to ELEVEN BILLON PEOPLE , it won't be long before we will need to book that trip. 

Wouldn't it be better to salvage what we have left of planet Earth?  WHY not get started with simple things like building all new building to be Net 0 & driving an electric car powered by the sun.

If Elon can build rockets at half the price as his competitors, and we know we can build Net 0 building at  Net 0 additional cost as demonstrated by Dennis Cuku and his team at the Mosaic Center just maybe there is something to this thing they call LEAN.

"The secret to the low cost is relatively simple, at least in principle: Do as much as possible in-house, in an integrated manufacturing facility, with modern components; and avoid the unwieldy supply chains, legacy designs, layers of contractors, and “cost-plus” billing that characterized SpaceX’s competitors."

The Lean Construction Institute has recognized that  traditional approach can be as risky as getting to the MOON and back that is why they have developed a new system called Lean Project Delivery.  It is based upon some simple principles ... Hire the best people ...  share the risk and reward. 

When we use Contrarian THINKING, utilize lean and more integrated SYSTEMS, hire the best TEAM .... Mars in not the limit.

As I head to the theatre today to see the Star Wars - The Force Awakens, I wonder if we can resurrect "The Force" in all of us to preserve what we have left of this beautiful planet earth.  

Let's start by making our building all Net 0 by 2020 and transporting ourselves around with as minimal as impact as we can IMAGINE.

On every new project WHY not try and create a new sustainable story that helps move the bar closer to achieving all new buildings Net 0 by 2020.   


It is important that these  Sustainable Stories make sense, utilize new ideas or concepts that have been proven and are economically viable.  When we have created enough sustainable success stories, Net 0 buildings will become the norm and  sustainable development main stream.

ZERO-NET-ENERGY BUILDINGS ARE ON THE RISE.

Zero-net-energy buildings are become increasingly commonplace. A 2014 survey by the New Buildings Institute (NBI) identified more than 160 ZNEBs in the U.S., with an additional 53 low-energy buildings that were “net zero energy capable.”

If a project wants to be newsworthy, it needs to incorporate something NEW. Developers of speculative commercial buildings (and, in some places, new home developments) have begun to showcase ZNE designs to differentiate their projects. This trend has been developing slowly since about 2011 and now seems ready for takeoff.
